Getting Started With Your Home Decorating Project

January 2nd, 2009

The term ‘home decorating’ is actually pretty broad. There are many different areas of your home that you can choose to revamp as part of a particular project. For example, you can redo your walls, floors, and more. However, with some helpful tips to get you started, you can get this important project done and have fun with it at the same time. If you are a beginner to home decor, don’t fret - below are a few helpful home decor ideas.

The Basics - Home Decorating Made Easy

Your home decorating attempts are more or less assured of success as long as you familiarize yourself with the essentials of the job in hand. No matter which part of the home you want to redecorate and whatever your budget is, the most important thing is to formulate a detailed plan of what you intend to do. Without a home decorating plan in place, you will not get very far with your new decor.

The plan, of course, has to take your allotted budget into consideration. If you rent the property that you live in you also have to make sure that any proposed changes are allowed in your rental agreement. You need to bear in mind the purpose of the room or rooms that you are planning to change, any limitations on space, and restrictions as far as color schemes are concerned because of existing fittings which cannot be changed easily.

It is a simple fact that a change of color can give any area of the home a completely new look. This is why thinking about the intended uses of the room in question are so important before undertaking a home decorating project. Choose a color scheme which will mesh well with the activities that you will do in the room and the feel you are trying to create for the room. For example, light blue or turquoise gives off a relaxed, peaceful feeling.

Be Creative With Your Plans - Make A Sketch

Sketching your plans on paper is a great way to get started with your project. You’ll need a floor plan, an idea of the colors that you plan to use as part of your new decor, as well as any changes in furniture or other design elements within a room that you plan to make. When you plan, you don’t have to use specialized architectural tools. It doesn’t have to be fancy - just ensure that you understand it. It can be a basic sketch just to lay out the changes that you’re going to make. It is essential that all the design elements match, including the furniture, floor & decor.

To assist with your home decor plans (for your color scheme or floor plan for instance), it can sometimes be a good idea to use interior design software.

There are many interior design software packages available that will help you immensely with your home decor plans. This can be a big help, especially if you encounter unforeseen circumstances.

All of the tips outlined in this article will be extremely useful to you in the beginning stages of your home decorating and can make all the difference between an end result which is stunning and a project which seems to never reach fruition. Remember, getting everything perfect the first time is what you should be aiming for, but it is important to keep in mind that paint and wallpaper can always be changed if you find yourself dissatisfied with them; it’s not the end of the world if these don’t turn out quite the way you had planned. Good luck and have fun redecorating your home!

Rather than look for a new home, why not look into a little home remodeling to help improve the look. Of course you might not need to do this for a few years if you recently purchased a house that had to be built from the ground up, but if you purchased an existing home that was already several years old, there could be a need for home improvement.

Home Improvements

Have you considered how you are going to pay for these home improvements because most people are not into remodeling and painting for example? This will not be a problem if you like home remodeling and can happily sit and watch the home makeover programs that are full of designs and ideas. A great place to look for design and decorating ideas is at a new housing development while you look around all the new homes they are selling.

There are many ways to pay for home remodeling from personal loans to secured loans, while others even use a credit card but it is the FHA that are offering an interesting alternative which should be considered along with the others. The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) allows loans up to 25,000 dollars without any equity in the home so the loan can exceed the value of the home.

Bathroom Remodel

There is a reasonable amount of flexibility in how these loans are used and providing no major alterations are made to the property or any residential buildings built on the land, there won’t be a problem. For homeowners that have started small projects in the past but never finished the work, these can now be completed without worrying about how much equity is in their home.

This program does not guarantee payment of 25,000 dollars but up to that amount although it can be used for properties that home a number of families and also be insured for up to 20 years. If you have any fears about payments, do not worry as these home improvement loans have been arranged with a fixed interest payment scheme to make it easier for homeowners. During recent months a huge amount of time has been given to worrying homeowners about their financial situation.

Having said that, it does not mean you should ignore everything you read or hear about the housing finance problem faced by many. Although no-one ever got into trouble for too much knowledge on the subject, it is easy for the situation to be reversed if too little knowledge is the result. So before you rush and make that application, slow down, read all the information you can get your hands on and plan for a successful home remodeling.

Ways To Decorate Your Home Country Style

December 24th, 2008

Often we think of home improvement projects as massive time and financial commitments that involve a lot of temporary upheaval in the bathroom, living room, kitchen or other larger rooms in the home.

This is not necessarily the case when simply decorating. And a “country” look in the design can be a lot of fun.

Country Style design is a broad type of decorating style that can depend on a house’s geographical location, but is often embodied by basic, simple furniture, subdued color schemes, vintage-print fabrics and milk-paint finishes.

To learn how to create a contemporary country style in your home - one that is attractive and fits your lifestyle - keep reading for the basics of country colors, furniture, fabrics and accessories.

Country Colors

Subdued, muted colors that will show wear over time are the first step to creating a rustic, country feel. A more modern country design may use a vibrant color palette that utilizes accents of navy blue, black, white or red to offset the design.

Country Furniture

Opt for simple, shaker style of furniture that’s primitive, but sturdy. Flea markets, old attics, thrift shops and antique markets are great spots to find treasures for your beautiful, country home.

Overall, you want to look at pieces that have minimal ornamentation, simply painted finishes and basic, straight lines. Flourishes and European embellishments should be kept to a minimum.

Country Fabrics

When you’re picking fabrics for your window treatments and accent pieces, look for small or visually interesting prints that appeal to the era to which you’re trying to speak.

Popular country patterns include floral designs, striped and checked patterns and anything on a basic calico. When you’re selecting fabrics, try to match large prints with smaller ones or louder fabrics with those that are more subdued.

If you’re using just two or three fabrics for accents, pillows, curtains and chair cushions, try to use them throughout the house. You’ll bring the color palette and your style scheme to every room with minimal effort, while still tying the house together.

Country Accessories

Your accessories and other final touches will make your room and really pull the design style together.

Look for homespun or handmade items to create a beautiful, rustic country-style. Touches like hand-woven baskets, beautifully carved bowls, primitive pottery or hand-forged metal fireplace elements are not only lovely to look at, but also functional.

Look for hand-spun and knit or quilted accent blankets to build warmth and bring your color schemes together.

Remember, overall, country style is about simplicity and grace. Don’t go overboard with checkered prints or rooster-themed cookware. You want a look that’s rustic and basic, not overdone and kitschy. With effort and restraint, you can create a beautiful country house that’s truly a home.

Significant Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Home Improvement Advice

December 23rd, 2008

With an ever-expanding network of home improvement television shows and DIY magazines, the do-it-yourself home improvement sector has taken off.

Homeowners everywhere are rushing to their local hardware stores, ready to rip out their bathroom tile or tear down old kitchen cupboards.

As excited as you may be to get started on your first DIY home renovation project, there are a few considerations you should first take into account.

You need to plan, understand your project, budget, and be aware of your space. To learn more about these basic, but crucial, DIY home improvement tips, keep reading.

1. Plan, Plan, Plan

Before you even begin a DIY home improvement project, you should have a full plan in place. And prior to making that drive to the home hardware store, put together a folder with all your measurements and a complete list of everything you intend to buy, right down to the last nail.

People get excited about projects and don’t want to get right to it instead of “wasting” time planning. However, by planning you’ll make fewer mistakes, be less likely to waste materials and time, and muchmore likely to stay on budget. In the end, you’ll be glad you did!

2. Budget

Along with planning, comes budgeting. As you plan the details of your project, keep a running tally of the home improvement costs for each material. If you don’t know how much something costs, check the Internet or call your local retailer to obtain a price ahead of time.

Once you have your budget, add 10-20% extra. Almost every home renovation project, DIY or not, runs up against unexpected expenses - it’s just a reality of life’s uncertainties.

Whether it is materials that cost more than you expect or a surprise problem that needs to get fixed, you’ll need to have the money ready to take care of it. Every good DIY’er knows to have a little extra on hand.

3. Understand Your Project

Before you attempt to tackle a major home improvement project, make sure you know what you’re doing. Use resources like books, your local hardware clerk, the Internet and how-to videos to get a good grasp on the project you will be undertaking.

If you feel like the project is out of your league, don’t hesitate to call in a professional.

4. Know Your Space

This tip is related to planning, but make sure you have enough space to take on your project. Don’t try to fit a new island in your kitchen if there isn’t sufficient room for it. Try to live by the old carpenter’s adage of “measure twice, cut once.”

Help With Outdoor Landscaping

December 19th, 2008

Home Improvements can be a real pain if you do not know where to start. Inside, or outside the house? Let’s start outside. The garden or the yard is a great place to start your home improvements. After all the outside of your house is the first thing people see when they visit. So let’s make a great first impressions.

Sometimes a little more landscaping is exactly what your home needs. Maybe, and that’s a great thing. In reality you should be highly excited about it because nothing is more fun than landscaping, not only will you have a blast as you plant and rearrange your plants and flowers, but your vision will be in overdrive.

Garden Advice

To reach a new level of beauty in your landscaping project, start by layering your garden beds. Your garden is the first thing that individuals will see when they come to your house and giving a grand tour that includes a fabulous garden is always fun and exciting. You will be the talk of the neighbors, and for all the right reasons this time, when you do some really good garden landscaping.

Backyard Landscaping

Layering the garden of your garden is uncomplicated. Finding out what kind of flowers you are planting is very important. The layout of your garden landscaping will be affected by many things including your choice of flowers and other plants. An example is not to place any taller plants in front of shorter plants. Plainly you should make a rough graph, where you want things laid out, before you begin landscaping your garden. This way, your work is kept to a very minimum level. Use this way as you go to greatly reduce problems and finish your garden landscaping faster.

Home Improvement

You should have around 3 layers while layering. The back row should face north, if possible, and it should have the taller plants and flowers in the back and then descend down to the smaller ones. When we purchase plants for landscaping a lot of the time we get baby plants, this is the trick to this type of landscaping. You will have to have to ask an employee at your local landscaping center how large the plants will grow. If you want success in landscaping, this is vital. You need to plan so that the tallest part of your garden is at the rear, when layering your garden landscaping.

The layering affect of your landscaping project will add depth and make your garden much more interesting to look at. This will lead to successful landscaping.

Advice On Kitchen Remodel Ideas

December 18th, 2008

Home remodeling in the kitchen and bathroom are very often the two rooms in a house that are chosen to remodel first. There seem to be certain particular items that always often need doing when someone purchases a new home or an apartment. Sometimes when a home is put up for sale it is always a good idea for the seller to do as much fixing up as they can. But they do not always know what sort of ideas the buyers have in mind for remodeling.

Kitchen Remodel Ideas

Remodeling in the bathroom and kitchen usually does not include having to repair old tile, or damaged walls. However, there is an exception for this. If a buyer has seen a home or apartment ahead of time and knew of some remodeling projects that need to be done. They may be able to get a deal with the seller, by telling him they would buy it if he would take the approximate cost of the remodeling off the selling price.

Kitchen Remodeling

Other reasons for remodeling in a kitchen and bathroom is that maybe these two rooms are small and the new home owners want to do something that will make the rooms look larger, and more comfortable. There are several ways of doing this.

Home Renovations

Remodeling the kitchen many times requires new floor or wall tiles being replaced or repainting the walls. Sometimes you may have to repair or replace the sink and counter top. However, if you are new at installing tiles, and you want to do-it-yourself, always research the internet, or talk to someone in the flooring department at the home improvement store, and get all the information that you can on how to do the job properly, what type of tools you will need, and any further advice you can get.

In the bathroom, the buyers can repaint the walls with a light pastel accent color, and put a large mirror on one of the walls to reflect the light. Another thing that may help the bathroom to look cozier would be to add more shelving, or cabinet space. There are many types of shelves at your local department or home improvement store that will allow you to do this. Also replacing the old mirror or medicine chest with one that has lights all around it will help the bathroom look larger.

One lady told me the other day that she had put a small aquarium in the bathroom with some “blind cave fish in it and some neon tetras” because these types of fish did not need much light and they actually preferred the darkness. She had been complimented several times how great her bathroom looked, that it had a homey feeling. . I do know that aquariums are more than just conversation items; they give a room a certain atmosphere. I myself have two aquariums in my living room, and I am always getting complements on them. You could also put one in the kitchen.

There are many idea’s that can be used for home remodeling in the kitchen and bathroom that will be coming at regular intervals. So just keep checking my new kitchen remodeling site.

10 Steps To Install Glueless Laminate Flooring!
Laminate Flooring used to be a home improvement area left only to professionals. In most cases, flooring such as installing carpet or tile still is. Recently, glue-less laminate flooring has made an introduction into markets around the world not only for its looks but also because of its ease of installation. This article series is a guide for installing laminate flooring.

Installation of laminate flooring takes around half the time of traditional glue down flooring and is ready to walk on immediately after installation!

Types of laminate flooring
There are dozens of companies that produce a wide array of styles and qualities of laminate flooring. They carry a wide array of flooring options from laminate stone to hardwood looking planks. However, when shopping don’t limit yourself to one brand, there are lots of quality products out there for a fraction of the cost.

Quality versus price
Although you will obviously be choosing your products to fit within your budget, don’t compromise quality for price - especially since you are installing your laminate flooring yourself! Cheaper ones can chip and break easily during installation, leaving you with a lot of unused pieces of tiles that cost you money.

Tools required
The most important advice to get when installing is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Although installation is similar across the board for all glue-less laminates, each company may require you connect the pieces at a different angle or using only their specified tapping block. That being said, you will typically need very few tools for installation. These tools probably include: an electric saw, a hammer, tapping block, pry bar, and spacers. There are a few other tools that you probably already have lying around the house such as a tape measure, pencil, utility knife and straightedge.

Get started installing!
Though installing laminate flooring can seem like an overwhelming prospect you never thought you’d tackle, it is a perfectly reasonable task for even the home improvement novice to undertake. If you are still truly intimidated, go ahead and hire a professional to install your laminate flooring. Or, better yet, start with a very small area such as a or laundry room to test and perfect your skills in doing it. Otherwise, it is a relatively simple task: tap boards into one another until they click and cut them off when you reach a wall. Your new laminate flooring will not only improve the area and increase the resale value of your home but you will also feel the pride of accomplishment for a job well done!

These 10 steps (articles are coming soon) will guide you in installing laminate flooring:

-Measuring Your Room
-Find Adjoining Rooms
-Finding a Starting Point

Home Improvement-Adding a New Pattern to Your Walls

Many people want to be a little bit different when it comes to painting a room. Instead of having the room one or two colors, why not try something different by using a weird pattern on the wall as well.

Kitchen Remodeling Ideas

What I am talking about is, say if you have just painted your bathroom and it still does not have just the right sort of flair. You can take an old feather duster and a small can of paint that will highlight the color of the bathroom, dip the feather duster in the paint about ? inch, this will put just a small amount of paint on the feathers; then quickly dab the feather duster on the wall in no distinct pattern at all. This will make small specks on the wall. If the paint is a little thick in some areas, do not worry about it, the extra paint will give it a different dimension.

Kitchen Remodeling Ideas

Even if you do something that you really do not like, you can paint over the feather duster’s marks and start again once the paint is dry. When you do make a mistake, always let the paint dry, before you try to fix it. If you do not wait for the paint to dry, you could end up with a really bad mixture of colors. Then you would have to repaint the wall over again.

Home Improvement Fixes

You do not have to use a feather duster; you can find all sorts of sponges and designs, which are pre-cut into many different shapes in the paint department. If you do not see a design or a shape that you like, simply purchase a couple of sponges in squares, and cut them into a design that you like. For instance, you could cut them into the shape of a bunch of balloons; or into a three-stripe pattern, just by cutting out the center between the lines.

Another idea is to design a stripe pattern on the wall. Use a 6-foot level as a straight edge and measure from the edge of the room approximately 6 inches and make a mark at both ends of the straight edge, then measure another mark ? inch from the first one, then move another 4 inches and make another mark. Next, if you would like a wide strip you can move your mark 6 to 8 inches. Then on the other side of the wide strip do the same as you did on the first side, then you can take another color such as white and make your strip pattern.
